Album Info:Here's a collection of photographs taken in Aiken, Bamberg and Barnwell counties. This includes the rail line that ran from Columbia to Furman, SC as well as the route from Aiken to Branchville, SC; the Charleston to Hamburg route. All or some of these rail lines are now abandoned and I've listed some information on each photo for reference. All photos were taken from public property. In some cases I used a telephoto lens. In many locations, the track was next to public roadways creating good photo locations. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Southern 5003
Title:  Southern 5003
Description:  5003 is heading back north at Barnwell, SC in 1979 with train 98. This rail line originally ran from Columbia, SC to Hardeeville where I understand Southern had trackage rights on ACL into Savannah. The line was abandoned from Hardeeville to Furman, SC in the 1960s. In the 1980s NS started abandoning more sections of this track. Ultimately, the line was abandoned to near Columbia, SC. At the time of this photograph, this section of the line through Barnwell was used only about once a week; usually on Saturday. Note the green Barnwell sign in front of the covered hopper marking the location. There was a depot or station of some sort located here but I never had a chance to photograph it before it was demolished.

Description:  NS 5120 is on the Charleston to Hamburg line at Elko, SC. This section of rail line is now abandoned from Branchville to a point east of Aiken, SC. As evidenced by the consist of this train, rail traffic was light on this line at this time. It was pretty much classic branch line railroading.

Description:  5131 is headed east on the Charleston to Hamburg line a couple of miles east of the Elko, the nearest town. Much of this route including this location was abandoned in the late 1980s; not long after this photo was taken. What is left of the route at Aiken, SC is now operated by Aiken Railway. Even though this was a direct line from Augusta, Ga. to Charleston, SC., the traffic on this route was light.
